The Mission: Architectural Maturity
Fragmented scripts and isolated packages created a ceiling for the local lab. This refactor focused on decoupling domain logic from execution triggers. The objective was to ensure that the same logic supports automated systemd timers and interactive Model Context Protocol (MCP) tools.
Building for flexibility is the priority. As system complexity increases, managing the core logic from a single interface becomes a critical requirement. This structural shift ensures that the foundational logic remains stable even as interaction patterns evolve.
The Humble Pivot: Consolidating Context
Managing multiple go.mod files across isolated packages proved to be a significant architectural error. This approach introduced versioning friction and dependency drift that hindered development velocity. The "aha!" moment came when realizing that the overhead of multi-module management was a self-imposed tax with no ROI for this specific ecosystem.
The decision to consolidate into a single go.mod file established a unified source of truth. This move resolved the friction of version mismatches and simplified the systemic foundation.

Structural Evolution: Internal and Cmd
Adopting a library-first model required a clear physical separation of logic and execution entry points. The repository structure now mirrors the logical boundaries of the platform:
- Library-First Core: Shared domain logic resides in the
internal/directory, protected from external leakage. - Service Entry Points: The
cmd/directory houses the entry points for services including the web interface, proxy, and ingestion engines. - Binary Centralization: All compiled artifacts output to a root-level
bin/folder for predictable deployment. - Unified Dependency Model: A single
go.modensures all services build against the same logic versions.
Key Technical Standards
The refactor prioritized structural clarity and idempotent processes over ad-hoc functionality:
- Idempotent Builds: Unified Makefiles ensure identical development and build environments across the cluster.
- Secure Configuration: Sensitive credentials moved to a centralized Vault system, improving the overall security posture.
- Standardized Tooling: Linting and testing coverage now span the entire platform through a single command.
- Artifact Management: The centralized
bin/directory simplifies service management and deployment automation.
Impact and Future-Proofing
This modular foundation reduces technical debt and prepares the Hub for the next phase of expansion. Adding a new access pattern now only requires creating a new entry point in cmd/ to consume the existing internal/ modules.
This architectural shift is essential for exploring how the Model Context Protocol can manage and optimize self-hosted infrastructure. The Hub is no longer a collection of tools, but a stable platform for hands-on architectural exploration.
